In a typical bit of London based thinking the 1977 GN electrification scheme went out as far as Royston (about 70 miles from Kings Cross) but the powers that be obviously did not think it worth going the extra 10 miles to link the wire up with the GE scheme from Liverpool Street to Cambridge. That would have enabled the locals to visit the local centre, Cambridge, on the new EMUs instead of having to suffer out dated DMUs which ran a shuttle service. After all everyone wanted to go to London but... These pictures were taken at Royston station in 1987.
