Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Co.

When I left school (many moons ago) I looked at a number of engineering companies with a view to applying for an engineering apprenticeship, Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Co. was one of them. Their class 26, 27 and 33 locos, built between 1958 and 1962, were used successfully in Scotland and in the south of England.


This class 27 is seen heading east from Arisaig station on the West Highland Line sometime in the mid 1960s.

Here another loco enters Morar station from the south with a Mallaig train about the same time as the above picture. 

While the class 33s were designed specifically for the Southern Region, in later life they operated trains through Crewe into Wales. This is one such southbound train in Crewe station.

This 33 is heading north near Winchester with a fitted freight, probably in 1975.

While this freight heads south through Winchester station in the same year.

 When the branch line from Hull to Hornsea was closed in October 1964 the Station building was left to deteriorate. This is what it looked like by late summer 1985. However, it is a Grade 2 listed building so it could not easily be demolished and it was a rather grand building so it was converted to flats, some of which were available for let as self catering accommodation.  These images show the present state of the buildings and area. The area in front of the old station is now part of the Trans Pennine walk. The station house has been made into two flats with the ground floor being holiday accommodation.

Class 68.

DRS have tried to bring a bit more style back into its locomotive designs with the new class 68 locos. I found 68002 standing at York Station in the spot where we usually find two 1957 vintage class 20s. 68002 is named INTREPID. 68002 stands alongside the snow plough in York station. The loco stands next to the new signalling centre.

Sir Nigel Gresley etc...

The A4 'Sir Nigel Gresley' is now in the workshop at NRM for its ten year boiler overhaul. This is it... admittedly it doesn't look much like it but I am assured that it really is 60007. And one of her predecessors from the East Coast Main line, the Stirling single complete with its new tender.
